What are Musical Theatre dance classes for kids?

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs with acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, love, anger – are communicated through music and movement.

Dance classes for children that include musical theatre provides them with solid technical training, performance training, and a fun, supportive environment to create, achieve and grow as a dancer and human being.

The RSD Musical Theatre performance program
  • builds performance confidence
  • develops understanding of dramatic role-playing
  • teaches character immersion similar to acting classes (learning to become/play characters with conviction)
  • strengths social bonds as many routines require a partner and working together to tell the story
  • educates students of the history and evolution of musical theatre styles by exposing them to the core classic and contemporary genres within musical theatre
  • prepares students who wish to pursue careers in the Performing Arts industry

The focus of our classes is on achieving conviction of character and confident role playing through acting and dance.  Singing is encouraged but not compulsory.

Musical theatre classes cover a range of dance styles. Based on jazz technique, routines will also include dance skills from ballet basics, tap, hip hop and even acrodance

It’s not just about dance!

Your child will also learn empathy – What does the character feel in this situation?
They’ll develop the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. For example, what is Elsa feeling when she’s singing “Let It Go” from Frozen? What does Olaf believe when he’s singing “In Summer”?

Your child will learn how to express emotions through singing, dancing and acting. What does sad, angry, frustrated, nervous, joy, embarrassed look like on your face, in your body, in your voice?

Students learn some of these techniques when performing “Surface Pressure” from Encanto and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid.

musical theatre dance classes for kidsOn a personal note, I’ve enjoyed watching and developing the curiosity of my 5 year old boy who takes musical theatre class as he learns about different cultures, languages and context.

He’s been learning basic Spanish after being inspired from watching Encanto for what seems like the 253rd time! We’ve read about the legends of Maui after watching Moana and singing “You’re Welcome” on many many drives home!

Musical theatre classes – while they are primarily about dance – they actually require some understanding and study of the English language! From learning how to spell “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins and in what context this incredible word can be used. Learning the meanings, synonyms and colloquial expressions used in “Morning Report” from The Lion King. One can go to great lengths to understand the “Seussical” Language!
